US Government & Politics Unit 4 TGA - Political Participation – 40 points TWO PARTS Name: Winney Zhao Part I – 10 points – 2 points each 1. What do you think should be the legal age for voting? Why? How can someone be a responsible voter? I think the legal age for voting should be 16. I believe that at 16 many teenagers are aware of the politics occurring and are responsible enough to cast a vote. If they are old enough to get a drivers liscence I believe they should be able to vote. Someone can be a responsible voter by knowing about the candidates and who they’re voting for instead of casting a random vote. 2. Read this quote by George Marshall: “Democracy is the most demanding of all forms of government in terms of the energy, imagination and public spirit required of the individual.” Citizens who are non-participants in democracy are considered free riders. a. Should people who do not vote (free riders) be required to pay more taxes since they are not contributing in this way? Why or why not? Yes I believe they should because by choosing not to participate in voting, they are choosing to not help the government. If they decide to not vote, then I believe they should still contribute to the government by paying taxes in this way. b. Should those who vote receive extra benefits? Why or why not?
