ESSENTIALS OF ADVANCED NURSING PRACTICE FIELD EXPERIENCE 2 Essentials of Advanced Nursing Practice Field Experience Purpose of Overview The purpose of this consultation is to analyze the University of Kansas Health System's strengths and weaknesses to identify where change may be needed. In order to improve patient outcomes and focus on "zero harm", which is the University of Kansas Health System's main goal, the organization must be able to identify areas that need improvement and have the ability to make those changes. This consultation will include establishing a relationship, researching and collecting data, clarifying the problem, determining the desired outcome, developing ideas and a plan, and presenting the plan developed to the organization. The data and research that was collected for this analysis include comparing Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) scores, other facilities in the Kansas City metro, and U.S. News and World Report rankings. Description of Organization The University of Kansas Health System is located in Kansas City, Kansas, and has been named the region's premier academic medical center, a world-class academic medical center, and the destination for complex care and diagnosis (The University of Kansas Health System, 2019). The University of Kansas Health System's vision is "to lead the nation in caring, healing, teaching and discovering", and their mission statement "as an academic health system serving the people of Kansas, the region and the nation, The University of Kansas Health System will enhance the health and wellness of the individuals, families, and communities we serve." The University of Kansas Health System has been ranked as the "Best Hospital in Kansas" and "Best Hospital in Kansas City" for several consecutive years.
ESSENTIALS OF ADVANCED NURSING PRACTICE FIELD EXPERIENCE 3 The University of Kansas Health System’s main campus includes 905 licensed beds, with plans to continue to grow in order to keep up with patient and community needs. The University of Kansas Health System employs over 4,000 individuals, this includes physicians, physician assistants, advanced nurse practitioners, nurses, nurses aids, housekeeping, food services, maintenance, and material management. According to U.S. News and World Report, the hospital has approximately 298,920 patient encounters per year, 27,380 patient admissions, 47,771 visits to the emergency department, 10,124 inpatient surgeries, and 8,743 outpatient surgeries (U.S. News and World Report, 2019). The University of Kansas Health System provides several services, including over 200 specialty services; these include cancer, cardiology, and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, ear, nose and throat, gastroenterology and gastric surgery, geriatrics, gynecology, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology and lung surgery, and urology.
