ARGUMENT ESSAY 2 Plastic Use and Effect on the Environment Plastics are a range of synthetic or semi-synthetic polymer materials that can be molded into the desired shape by applying heat and pressure. The cheapness and convenience of use attribute to the enormous use of plastic worldwide. In the 21 st century, various products and immense technological advancements have been achieved through the use of plastic. Plastic has a wide range of applications in the industries, commercial facilities, and even homes. Most of the plastic produced is purposed for a single use after which it is thrown away as waste. According to UNEP, the plastic waster is overwhelming, with only 9% of the total 9 million tons of the world’s ever produced plastic being recycled ( Giacovelli, 2018). When dumped into the earth, plastics prevent nutrients production in the soil, reducing fertility and making it impotent for agricultural use. When ingested, it can cause enzyme and hormonal disorder due to its carcinogenic nature. It does not affect human beings only but also alters animal life and the environment. However, there are indisputable advantages amalgamated with the use of plastics. The use of plastics conserves the environment from potential encroachment in search of alternative raw material. The ingestion of plastics leads to ingestion disorder, altered hormonal balance and may even cause death. According to the study conducted on 1033 birds off the North Carolina coast, 55% of the birds contained plastic particles in their digestion system ( Pavan, Rajeswari, 2014). Discarded plastics enter the oceans as discharge from industries, inland water litter tides or winds and wastewater overflows. As plastic waste comes to the sea and is exposed to natural forces such as sunlight and wave action, they degrade to form micro and Nano plastics which are absorbed by the sea creatures and later find their way into the food chain. On the other hand, plastic use substantially saves plants from being cut for industrial use. The birds and other sea

Plastics use doesn't cause ingestion disorders but saves the ecosystem from deforestation and plant species extinction. The continued use of plastics affects marine ecosystems. Million tons of plastics are floating on the sea cause harm to countless marine animals and sea birds as they become entangled in the debris or ingesting them, causing suffocation, starvation or even drowning. According to the UN, 800 marine species are affected by the 13 million metric tons which enter the ocean yearly (Reddy, 2018). The fish, turtle, marine mammals and other marine life may end up entangled in the large volumes of the debris causing death or suffocation. The plastic used does not, however, affect the marine ecosystem negatively, but it saves the plants and animals from destructive human use. For instance, before the plastic was invented, most types of equipment were made
