AUTEUR THEORY: TIM BURTON2Auteur Theory: Tim BurtonMany directors can be called an auteur director. However, few meet the qualifications to be one. When reviewing the classifications that a director needs to meet to be considered an auteur director, it is quite extensive. The director most have technical competence, a distinct personality, and interior meaning. Tim Burton is an auteur director and shows that he also displays auteur theory. Auteur theory is essential in films, and Tim Burton presents this theory bybeing consistent in his films and ensuring that the audience understands his movies.Auteur is the French term for the word author. When talking about auteur, meaning when speaking about films, it related to the director and the strong signature sensibility so that you know their film without seeing their name on it first (Goodykoontz, Jacobs, 2019). Auteur theory“gives enormous, almost total responsibility for a film’s success or failure to the director” (Goodyknoontz, Jacobs, 2019, sec. 8.3). That means if the film does not perform well, the director will be the one to blame and not the other members of the film’s making. It also means that if the film shows well, the director will get a majority of the credit for its success.Andrew Sarris, who is credited with making auteur theory popular in the United States, breaks it down into three guidelines that directors need to follow to be distinguished as an auteur director (Goodyknoontz, Jacobs, 2019).
