Jordan JonesGoldstein CMP 120 I221 October 2019The Search for New Beginnings Immigration has been a main topic for many years. “The New Colossus” written by Emma Lazarus in a poetic manner personifies the Statue of Liberty as a mother to all that are in need of a new beginning and new opportunities. “My Life as an Undocumented Immigrant” written by Jose Antonio Vargas, is a personal essay that discusses his life experiences. Vargas shares his story of how he is an immigrant that came to America, as a young boy, for better opportunities and a new life. Vargas’s essay bears out the message of Lazarus’s poem to show that immigration is key to a new life and more opportunities for those in need.In each of these pieces of literature the figure of a mother is a key figure in one's life. “My mother wanted to give me a better life, so she sent me thousands of miles away to live with her parents in America- my grandfather (Lolo) and my grandmother (Lola)” (Vargas 219). Here Vargas’s biological mother is willing to give her child up in order for him to have a better life andopportunities. She realized that she could not provide the life that she wanted for him. “A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame/ Is the imprisoned lighting, and her name/ Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand/ Glows world-wide welcome” (Lazarus 4-7). Lazarus uses that Statue of Liberty as a mother to all immigrants. She is welcoming and will to be the light to
