In the right-hand column indicate your reasons. Be prepared to defend your choices in class. Battle ( Name and Date) Why was it important? 1. Battles of Lexington and Concord (19 April 1775) Colonists heard that the British were on their way, and they prepared an ambush. As they passed through the village of Lexington, the British came under fire from a small force of militiamen. The British heavily outnumbered this group, though, and the militiamen were forced to retreat. A more substantial skirmish erupted as the British crossed a bridge just outside Concord.
