WRAPPING IT ALL TOGETHER2During this class, many safety and health related theories and technologies have been reviewed and discusses. This includes formulas for figuring flow rates of pipes, understanding solid waste landfills, understanding the methods for treating water, reviewing different hazardousmaterial remediation technologies, the purpose of an electrostatic precipitator, an equation to compute SPL from sound pressure as well as the background and responsibility of overseeing agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency or EPA and the programs in which they conduct such as the Environmental Technology Verification Program.The Environmental Protection Agency began on December 2, 1970. This agency was created to be the lead for training, research and enforcement of standards to protect the environment (EPA, 2019). Ever since this date, the EPA has been the authority on environmentalpollution concerns. The EPA has instituted many programs throughout the years to assist with the environmental pollution issues in the United States. One of these programs is the Environmental Technology Verification Program. The Environmental Technology Verification Program was a program that was started by the EPA in 1995. The overall goal of this program was to establish the testing protocols and verified the adherence, to requirements, for new technologies that could improve the protection of human health and the environment (Ashley et al, 2005.). Since the creation of the EVT, hundreds of new technologies and protocols have been created in the field of environmental protection. About half of the technologies verified are monitoring instruments for air, water, and soil. The EVT program help establish technologies that helped monitor the environmental impact or hazards that chemicals such as mercury and ammonia could cause. A part of the EVT includes The Advanced Monitoring Systems Centers or AMS. The AMS Centers were used to study ammonia sensors to understand how the ammonia levels in the
WRAPPING IT ALL TOGETHER3United States were related to agricultural activities. The AMS worked in conjunction with other agencies such as the USDA to obtain this data (Ashley et al, 2005). Besides helping provide data about the ammonia levels in the United States, the AMS Centers also verified the technology used to study the Mercury levels in the atmosphere. This technology is called Mercury Continuous Emission Monitors or CEMs. Mercury CEMs provide measurements on mercury release and the sources of various mercury emission sources and the hazard that this release may cause on the environment. (Ashley, 2005.). The use of CEM’s has provided the EPA with data so that the EPA can take preventative steps against the hazards that are associated with various hazardous or toxic substances.
