Organizational Leadership 2Business PracticesPatient and family experiences at an acute care hospital can be greatly impacted by organizational leadership. Many opportunities for improvement can be identified by evaluating current practices pertaining to current patient-family-centered care practices. Multidisciplinary teams can be formed to not only address these opportunities, but also implement strategies to improve the overall patient and family experiences. Important components of a successful implementation will include such things as sensitivity to cultural diversity, team skill assessments, and detailed methods to evaluate the effectiveness of the improvement strategies. Business practices, regulatory requirements, and reimbursement laws are also greatly impacted by patient-family-centered care in an acute care facility. One such business practice is the visiting hours of the facility. For instance, at my chosen facility for this paper, visiting hours are not limited meaning they are 24/7 for family members so as to accommodate patient/family needs. Regulatory requirements such as quality measures required by CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) also have a huge impact on patient-family-centered care. Specific measures such as hospital-acquired infections (HAI) and fall rates are closely monitoredbecause the public has access to the reported data. In addition, this public reporting holds the hospital and staff accountable for patient care while providing feedback to nursing leadership so they can support continuous process improvements. Reimbursement practices are also affected by patient-family-centered care. Value-based purchasing is one way in which hospitals are paid aperformance incentive based upon the care given to the patient. Hospitals’ reimbursement percentages are also affected negatively if high quality patient care isn’t provided or if poor patient outcomes are shown. The facility was built in 1918 and is classified as short-term acute care with a total bed capacity of 271 and a Level III Trauma Center (American Hospital Directory, 2019).
