(2017) noted that the causes of nursing staffturnover in the European Union are attributed to long working hours and job dissatisfaction. Theorganizations can intervene in job satisfaction among the nurses by reducing working hours.Work situations have been greatly fostered by some of the healthcare systems that have cut downworking hours. This study is carried out in an orthopedic surgery department in Sweden. Thisstudy aims to examine how reduced working hours for nurses and their assistants can helpimprove the delivery of quality healthcare in the surgical department. On the other hand, the study by Nolte et al. (2017) points out that nurses areoverburdened in the healthcare systems because of the complex demands, thus, making themdevelop stress and compassion fatigue. Likewise, nurses’ ability to provide quality care iscompromised, and they may leave the profession. The use of metasynthesis in this research helpsin understanding compassion fatigue and gaining insight into other issues that may lead tonegative outcomes in nursing practice. This research article aims to analyze the previouslyconducted research to explore the concept of compassion fatigue and get the key aspects thatapply to nurse care. This concentration allows understanding more about compassion fatigue in agreater way than the studies from each of the literature review. Relevance to Nursing PracticeReducing working hours and long-time shifts are effective in ensuring that nurses andassistant nurses obtain a sustainable working environment.
