The Great Gatsby Chapter Assignments Chapters 1 & 2 / Title: “Introductions” Summary In the beginning of Chapter 1, the narrator commenced by stating the advice he was given by his father when he was younger. Nick Carraway is realized to be the author of The Great Gatsby when he mentioned, “The Carraways...we have a tradition…” (Fitzgerald 3) and his name is said later in the chapter. Throughout the first chapter, Carraway explained how he came to live in West Egg in New York and how he just happened to come and live next to Gatsby’s mansion. Carraway is invited to Tom and Daisy’s home in East Egg for dinner where he gets to know more about The Buchanans. Carraway met Jordan Baker while at the dinner. Carraway is also introduced to Daisy’s three year old daughter. In the beginning of Chapter 2, Carraway vividly described the area between West Egg and New York as a “valley of ashes”. He also described the eyes of Doctor T.J Eckleberg looking over this area. As Tom and Carraway made a stop at George Wilson’s car garage, Carraway was introduced Tom’s mistress, Myrtle Wilson. It surprised Carraway that George Wilson is unaware of the affair between Myrtle and Tom. Myrtle joined the two on the train to New York, having left her husband with the impression that she went to see her sister, Catherine. Tom buys Myrtle a puppy when they arrive in New York. They drove up to apartment houses at 158th Street and took an elevator to a small apartment on the top floor. Tom, Myrtle, Carraway, The McKees, Catherine, and others smoked and got drunk at this apartment and conversed. It was Carraway’s second time in his life getting drunk. After Tom had just discussed with Myrtle whether she had any right to mention Daisy’s name, she repeatedly said “Daisy!” which caused Tom to break her nose with his hand. Carraway then decided to leave and ended up falling asleep at the Pennsylvania Station. Characters Nick Carraway - Narrator of The Great Gatsby .
