Francie lives in Brooklyn, New York during the early 1900’s with her mother, father, and brother. This book shares the life of Francie as an underprivileged outsider who becomes successful in life by going to college. Although she goes through many hardships, she is able to succeed in life. In this novel, we share in Francie’s sadness, success, courage, and joyfulness. In A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Betty Smith presents Francie Nolan as determined, stubborn, and industrious. Francie Nolan holds the character trait of being determined. She does whatever it takes to get a good education. An example would be when Francie wants to go to a better school than her current school. At her current school the kids are unfriendly and the teachers are strict.
