Include the following: the primary cultural goal in America; the difference between cultural goals and institutionalized means for achieving them; the various adaptations; weaknesses of the theory.Robert Merton worked on the findings of the idea of anomie that was introduced by Durkheim and later wrote about Social structure and anomie. Merton’s conceptualization of anomie and the modes of adaptation represent a unidimensional effort to explain why young, urban, poor, and minority males had high crime rates. (Moyer, 2001, p.61) Merton captured arrests rates that werereported in the FBI UCR as statistics of people committing wrongdoing. He experienced some events at a young age living in the slums of South Philadelphia with juvenile gangs. Merton saw crime as the source of society as a weakness. Merton indicated that anomie is created within the structure of the society when there is disjunction or disparity between the goals emphasized with the cultural structure and institutionalized within the structure. (Moyer,2001, p61) He argued that
