1 Glordens Cenat Union County College ENG-102: English Composition II Prof.: Sophia Mitra Comparative Analysis Essay April 12, 2019 The Rise of a Continent One of the great crimes against humanity is how Western civilization has exploited a whole continent and reduced it to what it has become today. Despite all the natural and cultural riches, Africa has been the object of many discussions for years because of the poverty and misery that crack down the whole continent. As the mother of all civilization, it has also been honored and praised because of the beauty and monstrosity of its history. Among all those who have written about this golden land, Maya Angelou and Derek Walcott have depicted it in a specific way showing the ugliness of its exploitation, its riches and beauty, its strength and resilience that make it stand firm despite everything it has been through. A comparative analysis of their poems “Africa” and “A Far Cry from Africa” aims to assess how both writers, with their choice of words, symbolism, figures of speech, tone and poem form, not only portray Africa as an exploited land by the brutality and greed of western civilization, but also how they have helped to be the reasons of its rise.
