UNIT V ESSAY2Unit V EssayThe Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has developed a set of criteria to use when determining whether or not a waste qualifies as a characteristic waste. These criteria were established to ascertain if the waste would exhibit one of the four characteristics, identified as ignitability, corrosivity, reactivity or toxicity. These wastes, even if managed properly, could pose a sufficient threat to human health and the environment.Ignitable wastes are wastes that can readily catch fire and sustain combustion. Such wastes would include many paints, cleaners, and other industrial wastes, and they are of liquid form. In order to determine if a waste is ignitable, it must be a liquid, other than an aqueous solution with less than 24 percent alcohol by volume and with a flashpoint below 140 F (60 C). If the waste is determined to be ignitable it will carry the EPA waste code of D001, which is the most common of the hazardous waste codes applied (EPA’s Hazardous Waste Regulations, 2015).Corrosive wastes are either acidic or alkaline in which they can corrode or dissolve flesh, metal, or other materials. Such wastes include automotive batteries. To determine if a waste is corrosive a pH test could be performed where the pH is greater than 12.5 or less than or equal to 2. It could also be corrosive if it has the ability to corrode steel. If the waste is determined tobe corrosive, it will carry the EPA waste code of D002.Reactive wastes are those that readily explode or can undergo a violent reaction. Such wastes would include discarded munitions or explosives. There are no real reliable ways to test if something has a potential to be reactive. Therefore, the EPA has left it up to the handler to

If the waste is determined to be reactive, it will carry the EPA waste code of D003.Toxic wastes come from toxic compounds or elements that have leached into groundwater from wastes disposed of in landfills. This is the most common way the general population comes into contact with chemicals found in industrial wastes. In order to determine
