Objective: Investigate the life cycle of a plant by growing a plant from a seed and by recording changes over a period of time. Materials: Styrofoam cups, lentil seeds, paper towels, water, source of light Advanced preparation: 1. Collect materials. 2. Carry out the experiment of growing a plant from a lentil seed. 3. Have the plant in the Styrofoam cup in the class. Procedure: Motivating question : Take a look at my plant (showing the plant in the Styrofoam cup to children), how long do you think it takes a lentil seed to germinate?
EC400 Early Childhood Math and Science Assignment 8 How to do it : 1. Give each child a Styrofoam cup, paper towel and a lentil seed. 2. Demonstrate to the children how to set up their materials- first wet the paper towel and roll it so that it fits inside the lining of the Styrofoam cup, then place the lentil seed between the damp paper towel and the Styrofoam cup. 3. Allow every child to place their Styrofoam cup on a desk set up near the classroom window. 4. Remind children to check up on their experiment regularly to ensure the paper towel remains damp while they record how long the lentil seed takes to germinate. Evaluation: 1. Do you think all the lentil seeds will germinate at the same time? 2. Is your paper towel dried up? 3. How long has it been since you began your experiment?
