Krsic 1Anastasija Krsic Ms. Bonnell English 10 Seminar, Period 6 21 May 2018Things Fall ApartEssay The literary work known as Things Fall Apartby Chinua Achebe, is a historical fictionnovel that depicts the personal struggle of a respected warrior of the Umuofia clan in lowerNigeria. The warrior, Okonkwo, struggles to find stability in his household and in the clan as hisfaith in his son diminishes and the village in which he lives in is still recovering from theeconomic mistakes of his father, Unoka. The pressure from both his household and the clansmenputs him over the edge and he is exiled after physically abusing one of his wives. His struggleback to the village after being exiled is overshadowed by the arrival of the Europeans and theirdesire to obtain colonies, resources, and to spread Christianity. The values of traditionalUmuofian society, such as the religious beliefs and the idea of clans or tribes, differ from thoseset by the modern American society today; and the household values of both societies like thepower position of men in the house are similar between Umuofian culture and American culture. In the Umuofian society, they practiced a religion in which they had polytheistic gods.The many gods that make up the religion of Igbo are based on natural occurrences and thenatural order of the world. They are always careful to worship the goddess of the earth, and thiscreates an awareness of their impact on the earth and what they can do to steer themselves awayfrom sin.
