The author O. henry expresses the theme through the setting, plot, and actions of the characters. The main characters Della and Jim love each other a lot and want to get something nice for each other for christmas but they are poor so they sell their most prized possessions to get nice gifts for each other. The summary alone shows one example of many of how they would do anything for the ones they love. One of the many examples of how O, Henry shows the theme, you would do anything for the ones you love, is through the character Della. Della is Jim’s wife who is selfless, loving and has amazing long hair. She is poor and spends her days in a flat for $8 a month. An example of how the theme is expressed through her is that when della finds the perfect gift for Jim she only has $1.87 so she has to go and sell her hair for
