Stone LoganHY 104Dr. Ratliff September 22, 2019Module 4 EssayThe “magical formula for white supremacy” refers to the actions and attitudes of white conservatives and white radicals living in the South (Woodward, 65). This formula is explained and discussed at length by the historian C. Vann Woodward, in The Strange Career of Jim Crow. After reconstruction in the South, federal troops withdrew which caused former slaves to be described as “national scapegoat in the… reunion of North and South” (Woodward, 65). The general attitude of the “White South” was one of superiority. Southern whites used that superiority to keep the white race at the forefront, because being the superior race had many social and political advantages. The whites believed that their control would be a favorable part of the overall power structure in the country during these times (Woodward 67). The “magical formula for white supremacy”, as Woodward discusses, clearly defined thatthere were certain ways and mechanisms that would be responsible for the white race to reign as superior. This formula was the key to achieving this superiority through applying it in various ways that would achieve its goals. The formula could be applied to create barriers for others while advancing the white race.
