I. States of Consciousness Consciousness- Selective attention to current perceptions, thoughts and feelings may be altered by daydreams, sleep, meditation, hypnosis and psychoactive drugs A. Characteristics of Altered Sates of Consciousness 1. Cognition = shallow, careless or uncritical 2. Change in self-perception and perception of world 3. Normal inhibitions weaken or disappear(conscience) II. A. Circadian Rhythm (Biological Clock) :Cycle of regular body activity B. Electroencephalogram(EEG) : Measures electrical activity of neurons C. Stages of Sleep 1. Stage 0 Sleep: Awake, but relaxed state(getting comfortable in bed) a. Alpha Waves: Rhythmic and slow brain waves 2. Quiet Sleep: Slow deep breathing w/ calm reduced heartbeat and blood pressure a. Stage 1 Sleep: b. Stage 2 Sleep: Sleep spindles c. Stage 3 Sleep: Waves are large and slow d. Stage 4 Sleep: Deepest level of sleep 3. Rapid Eye Movement (REM) or Active Sleep a. REM = “Paradoxical Sleep” b. Correlated with higher amounts of dreaming(most dreaming done here)
