Running head: YOU DECIDE 1You Decide Essay Ashley StearnChamberlain College of NursingCulture and Society October 2019
YOU DECIDE 2You Decide Essay What the Census Might Have Called MeAfter reviewing the Pew Research Center’s tables comparing the 1790 and 2010 United States census’, I believe in 1790 I would have been categorized as a free white female. The other category options were free white males, all other free persons including, native Americans who paid taxes and free blacks, and slaves(Pew Research Center, 2015). I would have been categorized this way because I am a white female over the age of 16. In the 2010 census I would have been categorized as white. The US Census Bureau states “White- a person having origins inany of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa” (US Census Bureau, 2018, para 2). When answering the question about my race I would have selected white because Iam under the impression that the question being asked is about skin color. Social Constructs When comparing the category options in the 1790 and 2010 census’ I could see a huge change in the concepts of race & ethnicity. In the 1790 census there were only four category options related to race. As politics and the economy changed there were many more categories added. The concept of the census had moved from biological categories to political categories. In1970 the question about Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish descent was added. The purpose of adding this question is to be able to evaluate the data and identify if there are any inequalities among these minority groups (Wade, 2015). With the increase in immigration the 2010 census looks much different than the 1790 census, there are many different categories options under race and people now have the option to select multiple races. The categories are white, black/African American/negro, American Indian or Alaskan Native, Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, Korean, Asian
