The blacklisting of Hollywood directors, writers, producers, actors, and other individuals alleged of Communist affiliations started with the HUAC (House Committee on Un-American Activities) hearings in 1947 (Ryskind, p. 376). The HUAC was formed in 1938 to weed out and investigate Communist supporters and Communists from the American Society. The committee was investigative and was charged with observing the activities of individuals from the Hollywood entertainment business after claims that Hollywood supported the Communist Party. As the Second World War ended, the once widely accepted and popular Communist movement started fading away, and Congress became anxious about the likelihood of a Communist rebellion.
