(For example, pretend you’re writing an example for a high school precalculus textbook. A student reading it would probably want more than just a chain of equalities— they’d want a word or two explaining where things are coming from.) You may assume basic arithmetic of real numbers and the quadratic formula (as it applies to finding real roots of quadratic equations with real coefficients). 1(b). Find all real numbers x satisfying x 4- 2 x 2- 1 = 0. Problems 2-5. The integers are the numbers {· · · ,- 3 ,- 2 ,- 1 , , 1 , 2 , 3 , . . . } . For every integer x and y we have an integer x + y and an integer x · y (you learned how to compute these operations a long time ago).
