RUNNING HEAD: COMCAST Casella 1 Fortune 500: Comcast Angeline Casella Introduction to Business 7 May 2019
RUNNING HEAD: COMCAST Casella 2 What Makes Comcast a Fortune 500 Company? First of all, how does an American company make the Fortune 500 list? Fortune magazine created the Fortune 500 list back in 1955, and it has become the ultimate bragging right. In order to make the cut, your company must have competitive yearly revenues, an example would be Walmart, Johnson Johnson, Exxon, and the list goes on (Hayes 2019). Comcast ranked thirty-three on this list with a yearly revenue of eighty million. Comcast has created an empire over the business world with top money makers such as Xfinity, Comcast Business, NBCUniversal, and AT&T Broadband. There are many other companies owned or co- owned by Comcast, but this will be an analysis of the core businesses that make up Comcast. Xfinity is Comcast’s most popular company, and anyone could guess their basic services from cable to internet and landlines. But Xfinity has so much more to offer than the basics now. Today they provide streaming services which come with watching your favorite shows on Xfinity Demand, or you can adventure into Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO, Pandora. Something to include on the landline service, which is called Xfinity Voice, is their Xfinity Mobile which provides mobile plans with great deals. Then there is Comcast Business, which has similar perks to Xfinity but offers better deals in an Enterprise or Small Business environment. Both types of businesses have an option of turning their office into a “smart office”. This, I think, is an outstanding plan for a business to modernize itself without dropping big bucks. With smart office, plans come with multiple high- speed internet packages and a high-tech security system. But to just focus on Enterprise Businesses now, their services list IT support, management help, and help with building your own network.
RUNNING HEAD: COMCAST Casella 3 Now moving on to a more complex ownership, NBCUniversal is much more they a network on television. Even though their network has giving billions to the Comcast name, NBCUniversal also owns Dream Works Animation and Universal Films. Then NBCUniversal also is a part of Comcast Spectator which is a highly reported sports media network. Now to put the cherry on top, NBCUniversal also owns Universal Studios in Orlando. So, if your dream job always consists of being updated on the media whether sports or news, to get to see all the new movies for free and take spectacular vacations in Florida then NBC Universal is where you should work. Next is the newest and probably the most expensive addition to the Comcast family, AT&T Broadband. Comcast likes to market that they have the highest speed for internet providers, but Xfinity started to get a close competitor. The way they handled this competition was by buying their entire stock. Now not only does Comcast own Xfinity, who claims to have the fastest internet, but now Comcast owns two other high speed internet providers (Reiff 2019).
