The lab is by no means required. The lab offers a different sort of experience that allows you to apply some of the principles learned in the lectures in a hands-on setting. I encourage you to check it out if you are interested. Each week, I will try to get the lecture slides posted online on Monday for the Tuesday lecture and post the lecture slides for the Thursday lecture on Wednesday. My office hours will be on Friday from 2-4pm. We will confirm the room number on Thursday and post it online as well. LECTURE Last week we talked about organelles and their major functions. Today we will focus on RNA. So far we have only presented it as RNA. However, there are different kinds of RNA. I would like to mention different kinds of RNA and their functions. I am also going to discuss cell energy and metabolism. As you will see in chapter 5, there are many different metabolic pathways. Rather than memorizing the specifics of each pathway, try to conceptualize the important parts of the overall process. Review Last time we talked about the nucleus, which houses and stores the DNA (the genetic storage medium of the cell). Transcription is the process whereby DNA is converted to mRNA, which is then exported from the nucleus and is then converted into protein either in the cytoplasm or on the Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum. Translation is the conversion of mRNA into protein. We will talk more about this later. We also talked about the Golgi Apparatus. It consists of a stack of juxtaposed membranes. The Golgi Apparatus transports specific proteins either to the plasma membrane for export into the extracellular environment or to be digested in a lysosome. Transcription and Translation A gene is defined as a sequence of DNA that occupies a specific location on a chromosome and determines a particular characteristic in an organism. It is possible for one gene to encode more than one protein. This was not thought possible before. Also, it was found that DNA encodes for enriched genetic code in the cell. Three bases encode for each amino acid in the
