Survey of Astronomy 103  Section _________                                   Due Friday 9/21 Assignment 1 Name _______________________________       1. What would our seasons be like if Earth were tipped 35 o  instead of 23.5  o ?  What  would they be like if the Earth’s axis were tipped 90  o ?  (20 point) If the earth were tipped at an even greater angle, the seasons would become more   extreme . (7 points)  Summer days would be even longer and winters days that much shorter.  The  temperatures would have a much greater variation.  (3 points) For 90°, there are two scenarios.  One would be with the axis of the Earth titled so  that they were perpendicular to the suns rays.  In this case, every where on earth  would have the same daylight, but not the same temperature.  The equator would be  getting the suns rays directly and warming up accordingly.  As you move further off  the axis, the intensity of the Sun’s rays would drop off, but these regions would not  warm up with a seasonal cycle.   The sun would always cross the same line in the  sky.   (5 points) The other more extreme case would be when the axis of the Earth moves parallel to  the Sun’s rays.  Then only one hemisphere would get the suns rays and the sun  would never set and get very hot.  Conversely, the other hemisphere would be dark  and cold. (5 points) 2. If the solar system were 10 cm across, how big would the Milky Way galaxy be  on that scale?  Please show your work.  Use orbit of Pluto as the outer edge of  the solar system.  (20 point) First, we need to know the diameter of the Milky Way and the diameter of the Solar  system.  In chapter one, we learned that the diameter of the Milky Way is 75,000ly.
