A Catastrophe Waiting to Happen CGW4U World Issues Thursday, December 5th, 2019 Today, one third of the world's fisheries are pushed beyond their limits which in the end will lead to an environmental catastrophe. Overfishing happens when fishermen catch more fish then the area can replenish. The species that are affected are fish that you see all the time in local fish

Marks 1 retailers like salmon, tuna, marlin, halibut and cod. Together overfishing has caused five percent of 1,414 species to become extinct. We need overfishing to come to an end or it will cause an enormous problem with one of our most precious resources that will leave the Earth with crashing aquatic ecosystems, loss of a food source to many and making the problem worse with more illegal fish to be caught. Together we need to stop this from happening We the consumers have a lot of pull and can really make a difference in the world as we are the last ones in the fish harvesting stage. For thousands of years commercial fishing has been happening worldwide everyday for the purpose of harvesting fish for income. Those thousands of years made a major impact on our aquatic ecosystems. Each and every organism in an aquatic ecosystem has a role and job to do so the other organisms can survive. An example of this would be herring as it is a prey fish for cod. If cod are overfished then herring populations would increase and eat bigger portions of their primary food source which is phytoplankton. These phytoplankton are crucial to our planet as they consume carbon dioxide. A marine biologist named Anothony Richards at the University of Queensland believes that if phytoplankton went extinct there would be an enormous impact on the earth as they absorb 40% of our carbon dioxide 1 . Each ecosystem has a food chain and each organism is important on the chain, when one fails it creates a domino effect but in this scenario it causes problems for humans and other aquatic life. If overfishing continues it can have not only an impact on aquatic ecosystems but an even bigger impact on the Earth. Overfishing can also affect the reproduction cycle of the species of fish. Each and every fish reproduce at different rates, an example is catfish as they reproduce quickly while tuna will only reproduce once a year. Tuna are extremely vulnerable to overfishing because of this as their populations will decrease faster than 1 ( 2010, July 28). Critical Ocean Organisms Are Disappearing | Science | AAAS. Marks 2 they can reproduce. On the other hand catfish reproduce often which allows their population to stay healthy except that since they reproduce so often the young are usually caught and kept. Scientists at The National Geographic came to a conclusion after testing that they believe the average maximum body weight of fish will drop 14-24% by 2050 2 . Smaller fish means less reproduction and lower population levels. Altogether, from the effects of disruption in the food chain to the
