Leadership Theories in 12 Angry Men 2 The three theories of leadership are trait theories, behavioral theories, and contingency theories. Each theory is different from the other. For example, trait theory states that a person is not made a leader, but is born that way. Behavioral theory states that one’s behavior is what makes them a leader. Lastly, contingency theory states that the way one handles a certain situation is what makes them a leader. In the movie 12 Angry Men, each one of these theories is portrayed by several of the main characters. The twelve main characters, or 12 angry men, are tasked with being the jury of a murder trial. They spend the entire movie trying to convince each other whether the defendant is guilty or innocent. A few of the characters stand out as being some type of leader, simply because they step up and direct the conversations, while others sit back and observe. Trait theories of leadership focus on a leader’s specific characteristics, or traits, that they were born with.
