RESTRICTEDBATTLE OF MOSCOW1.After the great success at Kiev, Hitler ordered the resumption of the drive on Moscow,200 miles away, by Army Group Center. Great stress was laid on the need to take the sovietcapital before the full onset of winter, but time lost earlier in the year was not to be made up.2.The first phase of the new offensive began on 8 Oct, when Guderian’s SecondPanzergruppe seized Orel, Chern and Tula in turn coming to within 100 miles of Moscow. At thesame time, Hoth’s Fourth, and (from the northern sector) Hoeppner’s Third Panzergruppen hadeliminated some 600,000 Russian troops by a bold envelopment at Vyazma by 13 Oct, andpressed on for the line of Mozhaysk (running from Kaluge to Kalinin) barely 50 miles west ofthe objective. The Third Panzergruppen (now command by Reinhardst) occupied Kalinin twodays later while Guderian took Kaluga on the 21st. The Soviet Government (but not Stalin) leftMoscow for the Volga as Von Kluge closed to within 40 miles of the city. But then heavy rainsbrought the German advance to a halt.
