COM 225 Chapter 10 Relationships with Romantic Partner Coming Apart 1. Differentiating:  the beliefs, attitudes and values that distinguish you from your  partner come to dominate your thoughts and communication. 2. Circumscribing:  respond to problematic differences by ignoring them and  spending less time talking.  Share less and only about issues that will not invoke  problems. 3. Stagnating:  communication stand still when you and your partner can no longer  talk about anything.  Communicating will only lead to more problems.   4. Avoiding:  distance yourself physically.  Can be verbal (I don’t want to be around  you anymore) or non verbal (just distancing yourself physically) 5. Terminating:  could discuss past and present, coming together to end the  relationship and to have some closure.   Maintaining Romantic Relationships Relational maintenance:  romantic partners efforts to keep their relationships in a  desired state or condition.   o Positivity: communicating with your partner in a cheerful and optimistic fashion,
