SPEAKout Summer Slam Poetry Event Royal Ontario Museum SPEAKout was first established in December 2008 by a group of young members who aimed on inspiring and educating their community by highlighting empowering and meaningful points. Since then, SPEAKout hosted many slam poetry events and two spoken word workshops, one of which was held at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto on Friday August 6th, 2010. At this event, many upcoming poets including SPEAKout previous winners, joined to compete for the first place title with a cash prize of $800. As the night went on, we all soon discovered that this competition was certainly not going to be easy as all the poets discussed various interesting and intriguing topics that left me along with the rest of the audience in awe. The atmosphere at the SPEAKout Summer Slam event, which took place at the ROM in the heart of Toronto, was vibrant, lively and riddled with anxiousness as I took my seat with the rest of the audience waiting for 13 of Canada’s top poets to walk out.
