Haley Brown Mrs. Mo College Junior English January 15, 2020 “Crazy Life” Timed Essay - Conflicts As a teenager, we are faced with many conflicts. Whether these conflicts are small and insignificant or very important to us, we all face many conflicts. In “Crazy Life,” a short story by Lou Mathews, Dulcie and Chuey are faced with many conflicts with themselves and against society. Dulcie struggles with finding the balance between helping Chuey while keeping herself afloat, Chuey has to make a hard decision that will change his life drastically either way, and society is against this couple from the start because of their ethnicity. Many conflicts come with dating a gang member and Dulcie is no stranger to this. Dulcie throughout the short story is struggling with trying to help Chuey while also keeping herself out of any trouble. Towards the end of the story, Chuey has no job and has gotten into a lot of drugs with the junkies, Dulcie says, “...he filled his day with weed and wine… I had to be in school, I couldn’t babysit him… He just kept slipping, going down, and I couldn’t pull him up,” (88).
