Willie Brosnan Psych 231 11/13/07 Assignment #4 A Social Influence There are three factors that are associated with resistance to conform. The first one is the need to maintain our individuality. A lot of people feel the need to be distinguished from others in some aspects of life, otherwise known as individuation. We want to be similar to others, especially our peers, but don’t want to be exactly the same. You and your friend might really like theater but you don’t want to join the theater club because you want to be different from your friend. You both like it, but you just don’t want to be doing all the same things. Another factor is the need to maintain personal control over our lives. Conforming to something can be seen as a limitation of personal freedom. You might be behaving in ways that you wouldn’t normally choose if had you not conformed. An example might be if someone joins a fraternity just because all the cool guys are doing it. If you join you might be doing a lot of things that you wouldn’t normally be doing just
