Haley Brown Mr. Lawther US History Through Film January 07, 2020 Ray Charles Biography Ray Charles Robinson was born on September 23, 1930, in Albany, Georgia. He decided to drop his last name to avoid confusion with boxer Sugar Ray Robinson and began to go by Ray Charles. He also got one of his warmest compliments from Frank Sinatra, who gave him the name “Genius”, saying Ray was “the only true Genius in show business.” Charles died on June 10, 2004, due to complications from liver disease at his home in Beverly Hills, California. He was 73 years old. Charles was raised in Greenville, Florida, and started playing the piano before he was five. When he was six, he contracted glaucoma that eventually left him blind. Charles also learned to play the alto saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, and organ while attending the St. Augustine School for the Deaf and the Blind from 1937 to 1945. His father died when he was 10, his mother five years later. After several years after leaving school, Charles moved to Seattle where he started his rise to fame and also became addicted to heroin.
