Willie Brosnan Psych 324 2/26/08 The Big Debate Women report higher scores on self-report measures of empathy when compared to men. Women also report that they are more concerned with and tuned into other people’s feelings and perspectives relative to men. There are two theories or perspectives on why this is. The first perspective is entirely based on evolutionary causes and the second perspective is based on social structure causes. An explanation as to why these gender differences might occur from an evolutionary perspective is that they evolved from selective mating. Males were interested in short-term mating because once the male mated with the female, she became a limited reproductive resource for them, and as a result the male would move on to compete for the next available female. The female, however, had to spend time giving birth and raising the child so she had to be more selective in her choice of mate, one that could provide more for her and the child (Eagly & Wood, 162-63).
