The Qur’an The Word of Allah and the Seal of the Revelations For All Times Quran is the Seal of the Revelations Muhammad is the Seal of the Prophets Quran should be heard aloud to appreciate it Rhythmic … but not music or song, Rhymes … but not poetry No musical accompaniment (except perhaps by some Sufi orders) It is linguistically and aesthetically different Orally maintained since Muhammad’s day Muhammad’s only miracle Written down as a single text under Caliph Uthman (644-656) 114 Surat (Chapters Surat divided into Ayat (verses) Organized longest chapter to shortest chapter All preceded by the “Opening Sura”, the Fatiha Sura names reflect something mentioned in the chapters: Cow, Bees, Mary, Joseph, etc. Hafiz = someone who has memorized the Quran, often done as a child Tajwid = rules of reading (where stresses lie) [7 official styles] Recitations in Middle East are always happening Printed in Arabic even in Turkey and Iran, really only true Qur'an when in Arabic Usage of Quran:
