The geography of Athens helped it with it location Commerce and trade will be a big partWar also contributeBecause of commerce, trade, and war Athenians interacted with a lot of differentThe climate also helped with interactionsHave great minds(curious about themselves and asked big questions)’Tragedians will lock democracy but do not hate it Politics was so important to Athenians that the word comes from polis The polis was the human natural habitat for them Politics was the normal wave life Athenians were able to find an equilibrium between the citizen and the communityBetween the individual and the society Being political meant expressing who you are as a person expressive content of politics Political interaction was an essential part of developing their personality Community became the collective of political will Sum it up: the community helped define you as a citizen, and as a citizen you helped define the community How did Athens emerge as this?Polis was a created to ensure common security Athens becomes the focus of the citizens moral, social, esthetic, intellectual, and practical life Polis strives to make the citizens life better Why polis is more than a political system it is a mode of being Way of life in which the individual will define themselves by their political view What makes Athens so distinctive has to do with a fundamental distinction/separation between two different spheres/realms of existence1.Private realm oikos 2.Public realm polis OikosRefers to the family (household) Is the realm of necessity
Its in the private realm where the body meets its necessity (eat, sleep, shower, rest, haven)For Athenians would be the realm of inequality (gender differences, difference between parents and children)Realm of domination men dominate women – women rule over slaves – parents dominate their children PolisExact opposite of oikos Realm of possibility Not restricted to necessities Equality all citizens will be treated equally Socrates was treated equally in comparison to any other citizen Is the realm of freedom Small political communities Citizens who didn’t not leave oikos to join polis where deemed idiotic Comes from Greek word idiotes meaning only looking at his point of view Polis are made up of units made up of citizens, non citizens, foreigners, and slavesAbout 300K people living in the Athenian city state
