What is Dante’s Inferno…?
Dante Alighieri (Florence 1265 – Ravenna 1321)-Vita Nova (1294/5): a collection of poems with prose commentary. Dante describes how he falls in love with Beatrice and how she dies.-Political activity in Florence; conflict with the faction supported by Boniface VIII; exile in 1302.-Other important works: De Vulgari Eloquentia (1304-05); Convivio(1304-07); Monarchia(1313-14).
The Divine Comedy by the numbers-1 poem-3 canticles (Inferno [1307/8-11], Purgatorio [1311-14/5], Paradiso [1315/6-21])-100 cantos: Each canticle has 33 cantos (Infernohas 34 because canto 1 serves as ‘proem’)-Terza rima: rhyme scheme of the Divine Comedy. The terzina(a group of 3 lines) is the poem’s ‘building block’
