Unformatted text preview: CHAPTER 10 Slim 1. Programmable controllers {PgCJ were introduced about lfiTfl as a substitute for relay logic systems. The PgC is a sequential logic device which generates output signals as a result of logic operations performed on input signals received by the device. Programmable controllers are used to control many types of production equipment: conveyors: transfer lines; grinding, stamping. etc. machines; molding machines; test equipment: inspection devices; etc. The ch has many advantages over conventional relay control systems: it is reprogrammable: greater reliability and ease of maintenance; takes less space; can be interfaced more easily with higher level computer control systems. More recentlyI the PgC has become almost indistinguishable from the micro—computerfmicroproCessor. 5. Major issues likely to arise in advanced systems which include humans and robots working together: Safety Control -aJ Safety for humans b] Safety for robots themselves {prevent robot arm from hitting another robot. etc.) -Under what explicit circumstances can a human override a robot actionfdecision? vice-versa? Monitoring Interfacing Psychological -will human operators have responsibility for monitoring operations of robots adjacent to them? -Human work pace varies greatly; rest periods are needed. How can this varia— ability be made to work with the even production rates of robots? -Robots are not very pleasant to "talk to“. How will the human's need for companion~ ship be filled? Will deliberate sabotage become a problem? B. a strong case can be made that humans will be more important in future factories, not less. Their functions will be different from these of today. but no less important. As was the case in question 2. the future study of human factors will likely emphasize psychological rather than physiological aspects of human performance. 9. There have been numerous articles published since about 198? praising the merits of the “network” organization. The traditional model of organizational structures. the "hierarchy". has come under increasing attack as outdated and inhumane. Yet. the hierarchical organization structure has been adopted by essentially all members of the animal kingdom. The student should be encouraged to search for the fundamental reasons and rationale underlying the hierarchy. ...
