Does the Volkswagen emission cheating crisis pose an ethical dilemma? Why or why
not? If so, who are the stakeholders?
The Volkswagen emission cheating incident does pose an ethical dilemma. The
more greenhouse gases are released in the atmosphere by automobiles, the worse
global warming will affect this planet for the future generation. The stakeholders of this
issue is everyone as global warming will affect people living today and especially the
generation that follows.
Volkswagen intentionally programmed certain controls to only be active during the
emission test – resulting in cars that passed the test when they should not have. The
cars passed the U.S. standards for emission test, but emitted up to 40 times more
greenhouse gasses than what was indicated.
Volkswagen was able to get away by cheating on the emission test because it was hidden
inside of software codes. Many functions in today’s automobiles are made with millions
and millions of lines of codes.
