Review various definitions of “ethnocentrism” as provided by your
textbook and other internet resources. Create your own definition for this
term. Give an example of how ethnocentrism has had an affect (positive
or negative) on a patient you have come into contact with in the delivery
of healthcare services. Describe how ethnocentrism may have impacted
the health and well-being of the patient and their future encounters with
the healthcare system.

Ethnocentrism is viewed by this author as an overall cultural and belief conflict. It is a
tendency to hold one’s own way of life superior to others. Believing that people, customs, and
traditions of one’s own race or nationality are better than those of other races is an unfortunate
perception that occurs often in healthcare. It is formally defined as, “the universal tendency of
human beings to think that their ways of thinking, acting, and believing are the only right,
proper, and natural ways” (Purnell, 2013, p.7). It is the cause of biases and prejudices that
