How did we leave things? Selkirk created an agricultural settlement Crops failed, settlers had no food. Miles MacDonnell issued the Pemmican Proclamation Metis and NWC enraged! Harassed the colonists and burned down their homes

Robert Semple Arrives Colin Robertson , an HBC factor led the British colonists to the Red River valley and set out to make peace until Robert Semple , the new governor, arrived. Semple retaliated and burned Fort Gibraltar, an empty NWC trading post. The Métis were furious!

The Pemmican Raid On May 1816, the Métis, led by Cuthbert Grant , raided the HBC York Boats, and took a large supply of Pemmican. He took the pemmican to Lake Winnipeg to support NWC fur traders.

The Battle of Seven Oaks! Caught in the act, Semple, along with 28 men confronted the Métis. A discussion under truce was attempted, but failed when a colonist fired at the Métis. The Battle of Seven Oaks began, but it was over in 15 minutes.
