SLP: CHALLENGES IN CHINA, THE STORM BEFORE THE CALMOpium Wars and Taiping RebellionChina has evolved through a violent past during the 19thand 20thcentury that involvedmany conflicts, two of which stand out the most are their involvement within the Opium Warsand the Taiping Rebellion. Within the Opium wars there were two major conflicts which tookplace, the first was from 1839 - 1842 fought between China and Britain and the second wasbetween 1856 - 1860 fought between Britain and France against China formally known as theAnglo-French War in China (Pletcher, 2018). This was a catastrophic blow within China’sevolution due to the fact that China lost both conflicts with western countries and loosingterritories as well. These conflicts would soon set in motion the toppling of a dynasty whichfavored the Republic of China within the early 20thcentury.The most important and relevant event within China’s history took place in the 19thcentury known as the Taiping Rebellion which was known as a radical political religiouscataclysm that lasted approximately 14 years spanning from 1850 – 1864.
