SLP: CHALLENGES IN CHINA, THE STORM BEFORE THE CALM Opium Wars and Taiping Rebellion China has evolved through a violent past during the 19 th and 20 th century that involved many conflicts, two of which stand out the most are their involvement within the Opium Wars and the Taiping Rebellion. Within the Opium wars there were two major conflicts which took place, the first was from 1839 - 1842 fought between China and Britain and the second was between 1856 - 1860 fought between Britain and France against China formally known as the Anglo-French War in China (Pletcher, 2018). This was a catastrophic blow within China’s evolution due to the fact that China lost both conflicts with western countries and loosing territories as well. These conflicts would soon set in motion the toppling of a dynasty which favored the Republic of China within the early 20 th century. The most important and relevant event within China’s history took place in the 19 th century known as the Taiping Rebellion which was known as a radical political religious cataclysm that lasted approximately 14 years spanning from 1850 – 1864. This turmoil ravaged 17 provinces and obliterated and estimated 20 million lives which altered the Qing Dynasty that lasted from 1644 – 1911/12 (The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica, n.d.).
