SELFIES ON SOCIAL MEDIA: A PSYCHOLOGICAL PROBLEM 2 Selfies on Social Media: A Psychological Problem Are selfies on social media a sign of a new psychological problem? Since the rise of the smartphone, different cultures adapted to taking selfies, with many people putting effort into capturing that one special moment to share on social media. Selfies quickly became a popular trend across the globe and transformed into a diverse culture of its own. Many critics of this movement imply that it encourages infatuation, unhealthy opinions towards self-image, and is particularly engaging to teenagers. Selfies on social media are a sign of a new psychological problem. A problem that is causing adverse effects on a person's mental health psychologists to link compulsive selfie-taking behavior to low self-esteem, narcissism, and addiction. Numerous studies have revealed a connection between selfies on social media with self-esteem among men (Burriss, 2015), narcissism reported stronger among men than women (Barry, Reiter, Anderson, Schoessler, & Sidoti, 2019), and selfie addiction affecting the mental health and well-being among teenagers (Kaur, Vig, & Saini, 2017).
