Giolitti1 Anna Giolitti Professor Crawford English 102 8 December 2019 Essay 3 Essay #3: Jamaica Kincaid Jamaica Kincaid is an Antiguan author who writes about cultural and biographical themes. One reason that her work is so interesting and intrigues the reader is because she is raw about her Antigua life. Although Kincaid’s works explore a numerous number of themes, one theme that stands out is the issues of patriarchy and how they relate to West-Indian women. Lucy, The Autobiography of my Mother, andAnnie John, are just three of the many novels where Kincaid writes about a mother-daughter relationship . To understand why Jamaica Kinkaid writes about women in cultures where they are below men, we first need to understand who Kincaid really is.Kincaid was born in Antigua, in the West Indies in 1949. As we all know, women have always been expected to do what men say. This is in every culture and unfortunately, it still happens today. Although in countries like the United States, gender equality is on the rise,it is not the case everywhere. Like in many other places, in most of the West Indies there is a very stereotypical view, women only live to raise the children, feed the family, clean the house, and have sex. They are expected to serve their husbands and having one’s own voice is not a thing. Although many authors are diligent
Giolitti2 about coming out and stating what is wrong, Kincaid is not.In one interview, she says“color , sex--just feel it's urgent. We have got to say it now. You don't know how long it will be that you can speak, maybe tomorrow you may be shut up again”(Ferguson, p.163). Kincaid is loud and proud about what she believes in . As a young girl, Kincaid was expected to help her mother with household chores, all which included serving her father.
