INDV101 Invented Language Project Part 1 - Phonemic Inventory and Writing System 1 Invented Language Project Part 1 - Phonemic Inventory and Writing System Objective: You will construct an inventory of meaningful sounds for an invented language, an alphabetic writing system to be used for your language, and a small set of rules governing how sounds in your language can be combined to form syllables. These sounds and rules will be drawn from the inventory of human speech sounds, the study of cross-linguistic generalizations about syl- lable structure, and will be constructed as a plausible naturally occurring spoken human language. Part 1 is worth a total of 50 points, and is due at the beginning of class Friday, Septem- ber 21. Resources: * You must select the speech sounds you will use from the set of speech sounds listed on the website of the International Phonetic Association (IPA): http://www2.arts.gla.ac.uk/IPA/fullchart.html. * You may wish to refer to the Language Construction Kit, compiled by Mark Rosenfelder (an invented language hobbyist) for models, ideas, and further explanation of this process: http://www.zompist.com/kit.html (however you may not simply duplicate content from this, or any other, site or resource!) * You may want to refer to the website Ethnologue.com for examples of the kind of demographic information you should include in your brief introduction, and to find information about possible neighboring languages: http://www.ethnologue.com/web.asp * Especially ambitious students may wish to type in the IPA symbols for the sounds you include in your inventory (this is NOT required, however).
