Discuss the objectives and results of federal Indian policy in the United States from 1790 to 1830. From 1790-1830 the government implemented multiple policies and procedures that were intended to assimilate the Native Americans into the “white society”. Although the government argued this was a friendly maneuver to the Indians, it actually set up and expedite the transfer of their land to the settles and arranged for a large scale departure in the near future. Although the government was strategizing to take the land, US officials were beginning to recognize the Indian rights to land and declared all future land transfers must come with a treaty. Henry Knox, President Washington’s first secretary of war stated that the “occupants of the soil, have the rights to the soil.” and land should not be forcibly removed from them without their “consent” or for purposes of war. Later in 1790, the Indian Intercourse Act was passed by Congress which only allowed public treaties to be the only legal means to obtain Indian land. The new treaty
