HOMEWORK 1: SET THEORY / RELATIONS
Answer all questions below on a separate piece of paper. All answers must be typed, handwritten pages
will not be accepted. If you need special symbols for logical and mathematical operations, you should
have them on your computer, but you may write them in by hand, if you do so legibly and neatly. The
answers are due in class on
Tuesday, Feb. 5
. (NB: please refer to the rules on plagiarism. I will not
hesitate to enforce them, should the need arise).
Answers to the questions are given within the
questions themselves in red.
A. Give three examples of sets you have encountered in your daily life in the last week. Give a formal
description of these sets (either by enumeration or description). At least one of these sets must
contain other sets. Examples (you may not use these examples as part of your three!):

P = { {eggs, bacon}, {yogurt, apple}, {pasta alfredo, garden salad, wine}}
