Perception review for test 2 1)Popular belief is that we only use 10% of our brains. A. Discuss specificity theory and how the popular belief above arises from that theory. We can continue to learn new things throughout our lives . On specificity theory there must be ample unused neurons to devote to coding newly learned information. Hence estimates that we only use a small percent of our brains. B. Define and discuss the alternative to specificity theory. How does it avoid the conclusion that we only use a small percentage of our brains? A small number of neurons can be used to signal a large number or objects. Individual neurons are activated by many stimuli not just by one specific stimulus. Even if one neuron participates in one representation it can participate in others. ( 90% unused is demolished) C. fMRI images could lead to the belief that only one portion of the brain is active in a task. Discuss why that conclusion is incorrect, referring to how fMRI data are analyzed. 2. How does modularity serve as evidence against the naïve view that perception involves pictures in the head? In your answer discuss the binding problem and give specific examples. 3. Give a specific example of plasticity in the adult brain, and describe the neural evidence. Neural plasticity is the capacity of the nervous system to change in response to experience. Examples are how early visual experience can change the orientation selectivity of neurons in the visual cortex and how tactile
