1 My Last Duchess by Robert Browning Analysis Introduction “My Last Duchess” is a poem that explores some of the most significant topics in life; capturing the attention of any reader with its not-so-subtle choice of words. Set in Renaissance Italy, this poem explores the opinions of a wealthy noble man as he shows the painting of his late wife to a marriage broker. It develops the character of the main speaker, the Duke, in a single long stanza in a form of psychological style that pays homage to Browning’s traditional literary style. The fictional speaker is a highly questionable character, with his different personalities showcased all through the poem including psychopathic, devious, materialistic, vain, and a twisted murderer. The poem is a dramatic monologue. A dramatic monologue refers to a poem with a character who presents his version of a particular topic. The character speaks all the monologues within the poem. In the process of giving his account, the character unintentionally or intentionally reveals information about his state of mind, attitude towards a topic, his personality, and his reactions to the developments relating to the topic. Dramatic monologue draws its main focus from revealing this personal information and doesn't necessarily focus that much attention to the topic under discussion. In this poem, the Duke revealed his personal information in the form of letting on the actions of his wife that made him dislike her and eventually have her killed. The Duke, who is the main speaker of the poem, is a very captivating character. He can hardly be considered as a noble creature since he had his wife killed for what appears to be minor violations that were harmless to anyone.
