Introduction: Experimental: The materials used in this investigation included: 5 unknown metals, identified as M 1 -M 5 , five metal ion solutions corresponding to each of the unknown metals, 1.0M NaNO 3(aq) , two 50mL beakers, cotton string, and a device for measuring voltage. To find the unknown metal’s potential to provide voltage, the surface of each metal was cleaned with a piece of steel wool, and then a 50mL beaker was filled with the ion solution that corresponded to the metal M 1 . The sample of M 1 was then placed inside the beaker, making sure that the ion solution did not completely cover the top of the metal sample. Another 50mL beaker was filled with the ion solution corresponding to M 2 , and the sample of M 2 was placed inside the beaker, also making sure the ion solution did not cover the top of the metal sample. A salt bridge was then created by soaking a small piece of string in a solution of NaNO 3 . Each end of the string was then placed in each of the two beakers containing the ion solutions that corresponded to their metal
